Anatomy of a Classic: Louis Vuitton’s Time Trunk Speedy

In 1896 Georges Vuitton had a problem. The family firm, established by his father Louis four decades prior, was doing well. Too well: The house’s trunks were so popular they were spawning a litany of cheap copycats. (Whoever said imitation was the sincerest form of flattery clearly didn’t have a head for business.) In a pre–Diet Prada era, what was a guy to do? Innovate, of course. Vuitton came up with an intricate pattern featuring a swirl of quatrefoils, flowers, diamonds, and Dad’s initials to blanket his hard-sided accessories, making them really hard to plagiarize. Which probably explains why, 130 years later, the LV monogram has remained virtually unchanged.

To commemorate the motif’s milestone, creative director Nicolas GhesquiĆØre did what he does best: ingeniously reconfigure house codes into fresh creations. This is the man who, in 2014, brilliantly miniaturized the trunk into the Petite Malle box bag. Here, he has distilled elements of the original Louis Vuitton luggage into a supple canvas bag, employing choice leather trimmings and trompe l’oeil artistry to print rivets and scuff marks—those hallmarks of a life well traveled. The monogram part of it all has been even further refined, into a simple initial. It stands for Speedy, another icon worthy of celebration.
