HBO and Craig Mazin are going from one massive video game adaptation to another.

The premium cabler announced Thursday that it is developing a Baldur's Gate original drama series, with Mazin — who previously co-created The Last of Us — tapped to write, executive produce, and serve as showrunner.

The series is based on Hasbro Entertainment’s Baldur’s Gate video game series and will also be executive produced by Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Hasbro Entertainment Head of Television Gabriel Marano.

"The fans have been eagerly awaiting an adaptation of Baldur’s Gate, and we could not ask for better partners than HBO and the incomparable Craig Mazin to build this world with," Marano said in a statement.

According to a release, the Baldur's Gate video games are considered "a jewel of the epic Dungeons & Dragons franchise." The series, which first released in 1998, "became a seminal landmark in character-driven role-playing games, known for its mature setting of crime, political intrigue, and edgy adventure."

The most recent game, Baldur’s Gate 3, launched to massive critical and commercial success and cites over 15 million lifetime players, more than 34 industry award wins, and famously made history as the first game to win all five major Game of the Year awards among its many accolades.

"The game’s immersive blend of gritty moral complexity, biting, unexpected humor, deeply personal themes of power, transformation, and control versus freedom, and a beloved cast of characters reintroduced the title to a new generation and cemented its status as a cultural phenomenon," the release concludes.

"After putting nearly 1,000 hours into the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is a dream come true to be able to continue the story that Larian and Wizards of the Coast created," Mazin added in a statement. "I am a devoted fan of D&D and the brilliant way that Swen Vincke and his gifted team adapted it. I can’t wait to help bring Baldur’s Gate and all of its incredible characters to life with as much respect and love as we can, and I’m deeply grateful to Gabe Marano and his team at Hasbro for entrusting me with this incredibly important property.”

To that end, Mazin is currently hard at work on the third season of HBO's wildly successful The Last of Us series, which is also based on the video games of the same name. Across its two seasons so far, the series has amassed 9 Emmy wins and 40 nominations.
