Sense and Sensibility is back on the big screen.

A new version of Jane Austen’s timelessly romantic story, led by Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, is in theaters Oct. 16.

PEOPLE has an exclusive first look at a scene from the director Georgia Oakley and writer Diana Reid’s adaptation of Austen’s 1811 novel.

In the clip, Edgar-Jones, 28, admits her feelings to Creed-Miles, 26, about a special someone. “He’s the most modest, the most noble man I’ve ever met,” says Edgar-Jones’ Elinor tentatively. “I cannot deny that I think very highly of him.”

“You think highly of him?” responds Creed-Miles’ Marianne, who begins to hit her sister playfully with pillows.

When Elinor says she “likes” and “esteems” her crush, Marianne laughs: “Use those words again and I shall leave the room.”

The new Sense and Sensibility costars George MacKay, Caitríona Balfe, Frank Dillane and Fiona Shaw. Its main characters, Elinor and Marianne, are “opposites in their emotional approach, as they navigate love, loss and financial uncertainty amid the societal expectations of 18th century England,” per a synopsis.

In June 2025, Edgar-Jones shared the news of her casting on Instagram, posting a selfie while holding up a worn copy of Austen’s classic book.

“When it comes to love, I think I am very much more Elinor in every sort of way,” the Normal People star told the BBC recently. “I definitely lead a lot with my head and try and push aside, bury my emotion.”

In addition to several TV adaptations over the years, Sense and Sensibility has previously made it to the big screen in the 1995 film from director Ang Lee and Oscar-winning writer-star Emma Thompson.

Sense and Sensibility is in theaters Oct. 16.
