Naomi Osaka's Sparkling Couture French Open Looks Are Causing Tension With One of Her Opponents

Naomi Osaka is currently competing in the 2026 French Open.

During her matches, the 28-year-old athlete has turned the tennis court into her own personal runway, wearing a slew of elaborate ensembles.

One of her opponents, Laura Siegemund, said she "couldn't care less" about Osaka's outfits and "I come here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show."

While Naomi Osaka has been expertly turning the tennis court into her own personal runway during this year’s French Open, some of her peers have taken issue with her elaborate ensembles.

Laura Siegemund, 38, who lost to Osaka on May 26, told TNT Sports that she "couldn't care less" about the 28-year-old athlete's fashion statements. "I come here to play tennis, not to put on a fashion show," she continued. "And if others want to put on a fashion show, then they should go ahead and do it. That's totally fine with me."

Siegemund also had an issue with how long Osaka took to get ready for their match, calling it "problematic."

"In our sport, at every tournament, they count every second, right up until you've unpacked your water bottle," she said. "But she can have a minute and a half to change. I have a problem with that...That’s the only thing regarding the rules that I don’t think is okay and where, once again, bigger names are treated differently.”

However, another player, Aryna Sabalenka, had a much different take on Osaka’s outfits.

"This is sparkling. I love it," she told the outlet about Osaka’s shimmery gold look. "I love that she is expressing herself and feels confident. That's the beauty of the fashion world, there's space for anything, and I love that she's bringing it on court."

Osaka, meanwhile, makes no apologies for her court outfits.

"Sometimes people say athletes are in show business or entertainers or whatever," she said. "I feel like for me, Grand Slam walk-ons are the only time that I possibly feel like I'm an entertainer."

Her only concern was that her outfit reflected the light, which may have caused her to be removed from the court.

"When I first saw it, I felt like I looked like the Eiffel Tower at nighttime when it's bright," she said. "Then I actually got a little worried because when the sun hits the dress, it reflects a lot, so I was a little scared the umpire was going to kick me off the court."

She was prepared, though, and brought "two back-up, normal dresses," but "thankfully, I didn't have to wear them."
